The Art of Memory |
|
uch has been written about remembering; how to do it, tricks to maximize it, methods by which to increase effectiveness. Some has even been written on remembering as an art form, like the dance of the mind through time. Psychologists specialize in fields of study relating to how memory works in the brain, as well as how memory functions on a practical level. Hermeticists study how memory can be enhanced and exercised in support of magical practices. Children in Asian and Middle Eastern cultures memorize more during their school career than many American adults do in a lifetime. What is so intriguing about memory? Why is it so important? In this age where most of us need not memorize anything, aren't memory techniques relatively obsolete? After all, everything can be recorded in a journal, or on a calendar, or in diary software. What this page presents is evidence that memory is not obsolete, that
it is one of our higher faculties, and that cultivating it is a beneficial
practice for everyone. On our course through life, we could
do much worse than to develop our inherent ability to remember, accurately
and succinctly, in a time when memory has been devalued as a necessary
part of life. © Lesa Whyte, 1999 |
